Social-Emotional Skill Building through Engineering Mindset

In this unique 6-part professional learning community (PLC), we will explore how to use an engineering mindset as a tool to teach social-emotional skills like self-regulation, perseverance, and collaboration that benefit children in all areas of learning and life. “Engineering Mindset” and problem-based learning is widely recognized as a natural fit in building social-emotional skills in children with diverse learning needs, especially those with social-emotional challenges. Designed for teachers of infant through school-age children, participants are provided a free starter kit that we will build upon during our time together. Participants will actively learn Engineering Mindset using the kit and PLC tools in their teaching environment. By the end of the PLC, Engineering Mindset will be a natural practice for teachers and children alike. 

It is recommended for all teaching teams of a classroom to attend together. If possible, attend the training together in your classroom where you have access to all materials during play time. This collaborative training time will be invaluable to teachers as you chart your course together. Individuals are also welcome!

Learning Outcomes:

  • Reflect and assess your approach to problem-solving, how you fit into the Engineering Mindset model, and where growth can occur.
  • Use simple engineering tools and methods to instill the six habits of mind and teach essential social-emotional problem-solving skills.
  • Pro-actively investigate problem-solving in your teaching teams to find answers to meaningful research questions. 
  • Successfully guide children of diverse learning abilities during engineering play.

Engineering kit includes a book, problem-solving poster, choke tube, and ramps and rollers curriculum starter kit.
