Social Emotional Early Development (SEED) Specialist

Susan Kay

Susan joined the Council as the Social-Emotional Early Development (SEED) Coach and Evaluation Specialist in 2013 and is now the SEED Specialist. Susan has worked in early social-emotional development for over 25 years, first as a child and family therapist in private practice, and then as an attachment-based therapist for a nonprofit therapeutic preschool. She continued with the nonprofit as a trainer, coach, and parenting instructor in all aspects of early childhood mental health and social-emotional support. Susan also put all that information to good use in her own life as a foster and adoptive parent.

As the SEED Specialist, Susan helps manage and execute key aspects of the Council’s social-emotional programs and services, including creating and delivering trainings, coaching early childhood providers in group and one-on-one settings, consulting with providers on challenging behavior, conducting outreach and marketing regarding services, and providing leadership and support for social-emotional programs and services. Susan also actively shares her knowledge of early childhood mental health and social-emotional development with other coaches to expand capacity in this arena.

Susan received her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Naropa University in Boulder and has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Michigan. She is a Certified Pyramid Plus Approach Trainer and has received over 200 hours of training in Conscious Discipline.
