Advocacy for Colorado’s Children: Why Your Voice Matters
At Denver’s Early Childhood Council, we know that the earliest years of life lay the foundation for everything that follows. Yet despite decades of research proving the importance of high-quality early care and education, too many families in Denver and across Colorado still face overwhelming barriers to accessing the care they need—and too many early childhood professionals are struggling to stay in a profession they love.
That’s why advocacy is not optional—it’s essential.
What Is Advocacy—and Why Does It Matter?
Advocacy is about speaking up for what we know works. It’s about telling the stories of families, educators, and children to the people who make decisions about funding, laws, and policies. And yes, advocacy is different from lobbying. Thanks to clear guidance from the National Head Start Association, we know that while lobbying (asking elected officials to vote for or against specific legislation) is limited in some professional settings, advocacy is always allowed—and always needed.
Whether you’re a parent, educator, business leader, or community member, your voice can make a difference.
What Parents Are Telling Us
In a recent Child Care Aware of America survey, parents were crystal clear: affordable, quality child care must be a top priority for federal and state leaders. More than 90% of parents agree that we need greater investment in early learning. Families across the country—and here in Denver—are feeling the pressure of rising costs, limited availability, and staffing shortages. Read the full report here.
This is not just a family issue. It’s an economic issue. When parents can’t find or afford child care, they can’t work. When educators are underpaid, they leave the field. And when children miss out on early learning opportunities, we all miss out on their potential.
How You Can Get Involved
Advocacy starts with awareness—and leads to action. Whether you’re new to advocacy or a seasoned champion, there are ways for you to make an impact:
- Learn how to be an advocate: The National Collaborative for Infants & Toddlers offers a step-by-step guide to speaking up for kids. Visit their advocacy page.
- Take action right now: Join national campaigns through the First Five Years Fund and Child Care Aware of America to send letters, sign petitions, or share your story. Get involved here and here.
- Find your elected officials: Use tools like Plural Policy or our Denver ECC Advocacy Hub to locate and contact your representatives.
- Stay informed about local policy: Our Policy Pathways Report offers insight into the biggest issues facing our community—and how you can help shape solutions. Colorado Children’s Campaign offers comprehensive information on the status of bills and issues impacting early childhood.
Together, We Can Build a Brighter Future
Advocacy isn’t about politics—it’s about people. It’s about children who deserve a strong start, families who need support, and educators who deserve respect. And it’s about all of us, working together to build a Colorado where every child thrives.
We invite you to join us in raising your voice. The future of our children—and our community—depends on it.
With gratitude and hope,
The Denver’s Early Childhood Council Team
